COMMERCIAL.

Melbourne.— The Argus, of the 22hd of March, reports :— In the import market business generally has been extremely quiet, and were it not for the excitement in sugar, very little indeed could have been reported in the way of sales. In breadstuff's we note the quittance of trade parcels of flour at Ll2 10s toLI2 15s, and a moderate demand is experienced. Cheaper floor is also got rid of at about 10s under our quotation. Oats have been run after, and we learn of about 2000 bushels feeding having been placed in parcels at 3s 4d to 3s 6d. . Maize is steadily moving off at 2s lid to 3s, and there is a fair business doing at the price, but notwithstanding the low figure, sales cannot be forced. In sugar a large business has been done. We understand that 'the entire cargo of Java by the Emile Marie, amounting to 14,000 matss besides other 6ooo mats, making 20,000 mats, in all, has changed hands to one buyer on terms withheld, and re-sales to the extent of several thousand mats have since been made to the trade at prices rising from L 36 for yellow, while as much as L4l 10s has been realised for fine Mauritius white. A private telegram has just been received from Mauritius by a firm in the city, which states— " Stop chartering for sugar, none in the market," thus confirming all that has been stated regarding Btocks in the Mauritius having become exhausted. Teas are in |moderate request for trade purpose?. Candles still meet with favor ; we hear of the disposal of 425 boxes at 12Jd.
