Per Kennedy, for Westport and Nelson : 2 chests, 2 half -chests tea, Patterson ; 60 tons coal, Nancarrow and Co.

The shipping business of the port since Saturday has consisted of the tendering of Tararua on her arrival from Melbourne, the towing in of the Garibaldi on Sunday morning, and the towing out of the schooners Cleopatra and Emma Jane— the latter with coal for Lyttelton, and the former in ballast for Richmond River, where she is to ship a cargo of cedar. The Kennedy also arrived on Saturday, and sailed yesterday morning for the North. In the tendering of the Tararua, the Dispatch got rather a severe dressing on the bar, having had her port bulwarks forward carried away, and her decks filled, the surf along the shore being very heavy, and the channel running northward, but there was abundance of water on the bar, the tides during the past few days having been unusually high. Yesterday, after the departure of the schooneis, the Garibaldi and Captain Vernazoni solely represented the shipping and ship-owning interests, and did so very effectively, the Garibaldi having lately assumed quite a warlike appearance by being provided with painted ports, after the fashion of a ten-gun frigate, and having at her top-mast heads— of which there were three, and these of peculiar construction — the Italian flag, the square and compass of the Maaonic order, and the British ensign. The Hokitika Star, of Friday, says : — " We yesterday stated that the towage rates at this port had been increased, and now learn that they are fixed at 15s per ton. We are informed that this is the Grey charge,, and also that it is the same that ruled here for years, till about three or four months ago, when a reduction took place, owing, to brisk competition arising. Thus it may be said that old rates have not been raised, but rather reduced, as no further charges are *iow made than were formerly customary."
