COUNTY COUNCIL.

Wednesday, March 19. ARAHtTRA JBRIDGE. Mr Barpp moved—" That this Council requests the County Chairman to communicate with the Hou. the Minister of Public w <>rks, requestim? him to cause plans and specifications to be prepared for the bridge over the Arahura River, at or near the site of Thompson's old bridge, the construction of such work having been recommended to his Excellency the Governor by this Council to be undertaken, and the cost of construction defrayed from the sum allocated to Westland under the 44th section of the l Immigration and Public Works Act, 1872.' This Council further requests the County Chairman to call the attention of the Minister of Public Works to the necessity for taking immediate steps to cause the work above mentioned to be undertaken, in consequence of the inconvenience arising from the interruption to traffic caused by the absence of a bridge at the place indicated in the above resolution." The motion was seconded by Mr Cassius, and passed without dissent. GREENSTONE TOWNSHIP. j Mr Dungan moved— -"That this Council recommends that the size of sections, in the Greenstone New Township be fixed at one-eighth of an acre; that the upset price be L 35 per acre ; and that a copy of (this resolution be forwarded to his Excellency the .Governor." . . The motion was seconded by Mr Barpf, and passed without dissent. • Mr Dv \-g.an- moved—" That the Chair- ; raan be empowered to refund the purchase money paid for sections in tha NewTownship to such occupiers of sections in the Old Township as avail themselves of •the privilege of purchasing sections in th§ New Township." Mr Barff seconded the motion. . The Chairman said that however much ! he agreed with the spirit of the resolution it was impracticable. The price of the sections would have to be paid to the Receiver of Land Revenue, and the morey would not immediately come into the County funds, though it would eventually. The only way in which the rdSjttgition could be carried out would berdy i placing on the Estimates the sum. re? quired to be refunded. This had not .been done, and, therefore, the resolution (proposed could not be carried out. There was also this objection, that there was • nothing to prevent any person from buyiing up all the sections on the New Townjship. It would be quite time enough j when the sections on the New Township ;were purchased to. move a resolution to t refund the purchase money. He advised the withdrawal of the motion. i Mr Dcngan's only objection to that i course was that the persons interested would think that after all they would ■ have to pay for their sections. He, however, saw that in the present position of the matter the resolution was impracticable, and would therefore withdraw it. But he trusted it would be made known . through the Press, that next session a. sum would be placed on the Estimates to refund the purchase money for the sections. ' . The motion was then, by leave, with>. drawn. APPROPRIATION". The Chairman moved— "That the sum of forty-two thousand nine hundred and thirty-five pounds seven shillings and eightpence (L 42.935 7s 8d) be voted for the services mentioned in the Schedule of Items delivered to members." Mr Barff drew attention to some | items of detail, and the motion then passed without dissent. KATVHAKA TOLL-GATE. The Chairman moved — " That the re? solution passed by the Council, on the 4th of March, respecting the removal of the Kawhaka Toll-gate, bu rescinded." Tb^e motion passed without dissent. HOKITIEA AND GREYMOXJTH TRAMWAY. The Chairman, in reply to a question by Mr Caruiug, said that sufficient time ha-i not elapsed since the resolution <■* this subject had been passed for him. to inform hiniself <m the m tter kf applying to the General Government to. give effect ,to the resolution. He would, , however, : state that he would take steps before next i session to bring the affair to a solution. ; The Chairman then ! declared the Council prorogued, ■.: r: ■■■ For continuation of Nwt, nt M page,
