THE MEETING OF SOUTH BEACH MINERS.
[to the editor.] Sir — After reading the letter signed "Correspondent," in your issue of sth inst., I have made further inquiries into the matter, and see no reason to doubt the correctness of my former statement. It appears that there was a Mr Power present, but not Mr J. Power, who is well-known on the South Beach as a frequent speaker at meetings, and whom the report was evidently intended for, as it gave the initial of his Christian name and a lon<? report of his supposed speech. The Mr Power who was present did not speak at all. I am positively informed that there was no Mr Ryan at the meeting, and that the number 1 gave as attending it, viz., 12, was correct. The latter statement, indeed, is not denied by your correspondent, but he replies to it by paying that the meeting was " largely and fairly represented on behalf of the i mining companies of the district." I still consider, however, that it was not "a large attendance" as his original report stated, and that the report was so far calculated to mislead. The importance of a public meeting i 3 usually estimated to some extent by the attendance, and a small knot of men cannot claim to represent the public on a question which affects the interests of a large number, unless they have been appointed as delegates by some really public gathering of persons so interested, otherwise public meetings will ultimately present a great resemblance to the three celebrated tailors of Tooley street, who claimed to "represent" the British public. I am, &c, : Obsbbvsb. Greymouth, Maroh 8.
