Tfmrston's firing at a planter named Landberg, who refused to permit his arrest on a charge of treason, has caused intense excitement. The whole Government machinery is considered a farce. Woods; Premier, remains at Sydney, unable to obtain a loan. Several vessels are chartered to load wheat at Adelaide for England. The Government will not award the Californian contract until the Conference meets. Hall's Pioneer Service was the lowest tender, backed by several of the leading merchants. The balance of capital required will be provided by the largest firm in the Indian trade. The A.S.N. Company's tender was several thousands above Hall's. The Hero delivered .the Californian mail on Monday. Markets dull. Breads tuffs weaker. Sales of new Adelaide wheat at 5s 6d ; sugars lower ; maize dull at 2s. The barque Lizzie Rosa, partially burned, was scuttled in the harbor and raised. Melbourne. An attempted swindle by a well-known bookmaker at the Croxton Park Races is exciting attention. Loup Garou and Commodore are ecratched for their engagements. The Chief Justice stated that if the full term of imprisonment were awarded to Mount and Morris in the Carl case, they must be transported to Western Australia, or remanded to England. Sentence is not yet passed. Fraucis and Langton proceed as Delegates to Sydney* and Venables, Inspector of Schools, is appointed Secretary to the Education Board. . The Theatrical Cricket Match on the Melbourne Ground in costume caused amusement. Two brothers named Smyth, schoolmasters, were drowned in Lake Colac by the upsetting of a boafc. Messrs Yogel and Reynolds arrived to-day. Adelaide. A police trooper at Yam Creek reports a new discovery of extraordinary richness in Winn's claim. The reef is said to be 9ft wide, giving a.n average of lOOoz to the ton.
