THE AGAMEMNON.

A letter has been received by a gentleman in Otago from a passenger by the ship Agamemnon, which is now long overdue at Lyttelton. The letter is dated Rio de Janeiro, Bth June, 1872, and in the course of it the writer says:— "We sailed from London on March 9bh, and had very fine weather, but a leak whick we had when we left kept steadily increasing, and our masts and yards also began to show signs of being in a very dangerous state. At last the officers and crew came to the conclusion that it was running a fearful risk to proceed farther on the voyage in the condition in which the ship was, as we had all the worst of the passage to come. So they first petitioned the Captain to put in here, but he declined to listen to them at aIL It was then agreed to take the command from hi aa and to put back to Ivio for the safety of the ship, cargo, and all on board, which was done. On arriving, we passengers entered a protest with the British Consul against proceeding farther. A survey has been held on the ship, and her masts and yards condemned ; but a further one is to be held concerning tiie leak, and it is very probable that the ship will either be condemned or elae discharged and put into day dock. . Tn both cases we may either be detained here until another vessel is sent out, or this one repaired ; or else we may be Bent on by some other route, which I hope may be the case."
