The steamer Tararua, from Melbourne, arrived off the port at an early hour on Saturday morning, and transhipped to the Dispatch about 40 tons of cargo, which were taken to the Transit Shed. Tho Tararua proceeded to Nelson, arriving there yesterday morning. The schooner Garibaldi, from Westport, arrived in port on Saturday, to load a cargo of coal for Hokitika, The 8.8. Claud Hamilton, which ia making her way round by the ports, is not expected to arrive here before Tuesday. After being closed for eight years, the shorte«t sea passage between Great Britain and Ireland, that from Lame and Stranraer, has been re-opened. A fine new paddle steamship, the Princess Louise, hus been specially ouilt for the station by Messrs Tod and M'Gregor, of Glasgow. It is announced that in this short sea route London will be brought within about 164 hours of Belfast, Birmingham about 15 hours, Manchester or Liverpool about 12 hours, and Carlisle about 7| hours, and this can be accomplished with what will be so highly prized by so many cross-channel passengers— only two hours of a passage, and 40 minutes of loch sailing. The Princess Louise made her trial trip recently from Lame to Stranraer. There were 600 passengers on board.
