MINING ACCIDENT RELIEF FUND.

The Thames correspondent of the ftouthem Orow says that the Mining Accident Relief Fund Association is strengthening mightily, and already numbers nearly 300 members. Evidently impressed by the many accidents that have occurred lately with the necessity of making provision for the evil day, the miners are -paying greater attention to, and regard* with increased favor the cooperative system introduced by Mr S. E. Richards, the Caledonian mine manager, for the purpose of extending substantial relief to those unfortunates who may be overtaken by mishap whilst following their hazardous occupation. New names are daily added to the relief fund list, and, at the rate it is increasing, the great majority of the miners will be, enrolled before six months have expired. * An English Accidental Insurance Company, wo see, is about to open a branch office in, Melbourne. The paper from which we have already quoted says : — "Why should we not have an 'Accidental,' or more properly, an Accident Insurance Company on a local oasia in this city, including alto our gold fields? Capital, if only a good investment can be foauU, is plentiful in Auckland. We have abundant proof of this in the readiness with which the South British Fire Insurance Company was formed here a short time ago, and when three times the amount of ■ capi tal r required was subscribed at a few days' notice. Such a company as the one referred to about to be extended to Melbourne would, we are satisfied,' meet with very general support in all parts of New Zealand. Accidents to life and limb are of very frequent occurrence in the Colonies, more especially on the gold fields, and it cannot be doubted that an institution which; for the payment of a small sum of money would hold out certain advantages in case of accident would be appreciated and patronised extensively by all classes of the community. We think this matter is deserving of the attention of our local capitalists.?
