[NEW ZEALAND TRESS ASSOCIATION.] PEOCJJED.JCS IN PARLIAMEUT. PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT. THE COAL-MINE RAILWAY TO BE CONSTRUCTED. THE AHAURA AND AMURI ROAD. ANOTHER WANT OF CONFIDENCE MOTION. Wellington, Oct. 3. 1 Mr Reid made the Public Works Statement last night. It was very short and concise. The railway works under contract amounted to L 910,823. To complete them would require L 506,201, giving a total of LI, 417, 025 as against L 1,036,697,, 036, 697, the amount authorised - by Parliament for them. The House would, therefore, have to vote L 380,328 mere. The total liabilities and expenditure on Middle Island railways and road works were L 1,489,209, leaving a balance of L 547,992 available for future works. It was intended during the year to commence the -'construction of the following lines : — Lower to Upper IHutt ; Nelson to Foxhill ; kakaia to Ashburton ; Timaru to Waitaki 'and (Moeraki ; Tokomairiro to Lawrence ; Wintbn to Riverton; branch lines— Rolleston andMalvern; Coal Fields Railways — Brunner and Kawakawa ; being a total of 136 miles of main lines, 20 miles of branch lines, and 12 miles of coal lines. He would during the recess- consider the best means of developing coal mines and constructing branch lines as feeders to the main lines. The sum of L 227,084 was available for roads in the North Island, which would be constructed as quickly as possible. The Government would survey and prepare for a contract of 232 miles of the following railways : — Auckland to Riverhead, Pakipaci, Ruatanuoha, Upper Hutt, Masterton ; Picton and Blenheim extension ; Ashley River to north bank Kowai ; Ashburton to Temuka ; Moeraki to WaiVouaiti ; 'Winton to Kingston ; and make preliminary surveys and partly working surveys of 198 miles : Manawatu to Wanganui jr Waitara to Wanganui; and preliminary surveys 85 miles { Mercer to Upper Waikatp ; Waikouaiti to Dunedin ; also working plans for 70 mile 3of Canterbury branch lines, and 12 miles Mount Rochfort coal lines ; would also make boring plans for Clutha Bridge and Protective Works.- These surveys would cost L 14,000. The following portion of the Public W.orks Statement refers especially to Westland : — Expenditure and liabilities \ Roads, Nelson South- West Gald Fields, L 29,400, being an excess 6fLß962over appropriation. Roads iv Westlatid — Expenditure and liabilities, L 38,085, leaving unexpended a balance of L 3608," which will probably suffice for widening eight miles of road from Kanieri to South Creek, and two miles in the neighborhood of Ross. He (Mr Reid) intended to ask a vote of L3OOO for a road from West*' port to Nine-Mile Creek, and a similar sum for a bridle track from Ahaura to Amuri, thence to Kaikpura', if Nelßen and Canterbury each give LISOO tewards the werk. He also proposed a vote to make a careful survey to ascertain the cost of constructing a road from Ahaura to the Thirty-second Mile Post. He would do all in his power to promote the success of the Gold Fields Water Supply Scheme, and, as soon as possible, consider existing applications. The amount of this fund remaining available wa5L23,355. . 8 p.m. The proceedings in the House . to-day were uninteresting. Mr Yogel gave notice that he would move to-morrow that the House has no cpnfidence in the Government.
