PROCEEDINGS IN PARLIAMENT.
WEST COAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT. • DELIVERY OF WEST COAST MAILS. Wellington, Oct. 1. In reply to a question from Mr White Mr Curtis said that he believed that the S-ui Francisco mails had, on the whole, been delivered at the West Coast ports with a fair amount of regularity. He saw no way at present of improving, in regularity or speed, 'such delivery, but if any way was suggested at a moderate cost the Government would be glad to adopt it. In reply to another question from Mr White Mr Reid said the Government had given instructions to widen the present Bft formation of the Kanieri and Ross road to 12ft. Mr Shephard introduced a Bill to readjust the boundaries of the Province of Nelson, and to provide for the construction of roads on the West Coast Gold Fields. He explained that the object was to extend the boundary of the Province to the Teremakau. It was also intended to equalise the representation in the Provincial Council between the Gold Fields and the rest of the Province, .and to develop to the utmost extent the principles of local self-governraenti ! Mr Harrison, he said, had assisted him in the preparation of the heads of the Bill. The Public Works Statement has been postponed. Mr Reid said he would endeavor to make it to-morrow. The delay was caused by his discovering last night certain liabilities of which he said he was previously unaware.
