-F-. 1 [THAMES TIMES, FEB. 7] Tauranga, Feb. 4. News arrived here late last evening, informing us of an encounter with the rebels, midway between Ohiuemutu and Tauranga, in which we have to record the loss of Sergt. Whittey, A.0,, one private A.C., and two men of the Native Contingent wounded. It is reported that the party were fired on from an ambuscade, as no trace whatever of the enemy was to be seen, other than the gleaming of the rifle barrels. The attack was rapid, and after one volley two or three natives forming the ambuscade were seen retiring rapidly to thi bush. Serjeant Whittey was deeply respected by all his comrades. A correspondent furnishes us with further particulars : — " The party fired upon were a number of Colonel Frazer's men marching to join M 'Donald. Sergeant Whictey, well known in Napier, was killed, and also one native. Two other natives were wounded. i\'o bodies of natives were found, although their fire was promptly returned, and it is supposed they effected their retreat without any casualty. The natives who made the attack were not, we hear, any of Te Kooti's band,, but another set of rebels altogether. (Far continuation of news see Fourth Page.)
