The latest rumor is that some adventurous members of English swimming clubs have determined to swim across the Channel on their way to the Paris Exhibition. They are to be accompanied by umpires in boats, and are to be furnished with planks to rest upon at stated intervals. The Ofar/o Daily Times of the 23rd inst. says : — A telegram was received., yesterday by the Commissioner of Police, -'stating .that news had beeu received at Tokomairiro that four men bad been drowned, on. Saturday, while engaged in endeavoring to recover portions of the wreck of the South Aiistralkn. The acuonnt given was that the boat in. which. the. men were was upset. The names of three of the men are given as PJekarcl, Davidson, and "Fred;" that of the fourth man not being mentioned. Sergeant^ Weidner started from Tokomairiro for the coastals soon as the news was received there ou Sunday evening ; but tli e Sergeant had to go. eighteen milts over the ranges, and no information had been received from him up to last evening.
