MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Novembee 2i. [Before G-. L. Mellieh, Esq., B.M.] Deunk and Disoedbely. Two first offenders were fined 5s each, two old offenders 20s, and two 40s each. Cbuelty to Animals. — James Brown, charged with drunkenness and cruelly illtreating and torturing a horse, was fined 60s. Laecsny.—A boy named Henry Beardsley pleaded guilty to stealing a revolver and two pistols from the shop of James Froggatt, Cathedral square. The Bench adjourned the case for twenty-four hours to decide what should be done with the boy. Assault. —Edward Wilkinson was charged with violently assaulting his wife, Isabella Wilkinson, who desired to have him bound over to keep the peace towards her. Mr R. D. Thomas appeared for the complainant. The case was adjourned for a week, to give the parties an opportunity of arranging terms for the future. Hackney Oaeeiaqb By-law. John Miller was fined 10s, Thomas Shailer 10s, and Thomas Kerr 20s, for committing breaches of the Hackney Carriage By law. Ceossino Railway Line.— John Gr.iir, summoned for crossing the railway line while an engine was approaching, said he had acted through ignorance. The summons was dismissed. Railway By-Laws. —William Mitchell was summoned for riding from Ashburton to Chiistchurch without a ticket. The defendant admitted the offence, and was fined the amount of the fare, 8s lOd ; and costs, 2s. Fubious Riding. —Albert Kveritt, Thomas Everitt, and William Robinson were charged with furious riding on the sands at Sumner on the 9th inst., to the danger of the public. The defendants said they were not aware that galloping on the sands were forbidden. They were close to the water’s edge, and endangering no one’s safety. The Bench admonished the defendants for the future, and dismissed the case. Obscene Language. —Lucy Coster was summoned for making use of obscene language within hearing of a public place. Mr Neck for the defendant. After hearing the evidence on both sides the Bench considered

there was a doubt as to whether the defen - dant had used the words attributed to he r, and dismissed the case. John Fish was charged with making use of obscene language within hearing of a public thoroughfare on the 31st ultimo. A witness named Spencer and Constable Brooks gays evidence that they heard the language made use of by the defendant, who was drunk at the time, and standing outside his house. As it appeared to be exceptional conduct cf the defendant, the Bench inflicted a line- of 10a. Unbeghstebed Dog-9. —Peter McCallum,, R. Mcßicol, Sydney Smith, and James Watson, were each fined 20s, for having unregistered dogs in their possesoion. Miscellaneous. — A number of minor cases under the by-laws were disposed of.
