The State Legislative Assembly, m committee to-night, agreed to the holding of u referendum on May o on the question of reform of the Legislative Council. Labor members sought to have the reterondum put off until the General Election at the end of the year, thus saving a considerable sum of money. The Premier, however, said he was afraid that if Labor were then returned an attempt would be made to abolish the Upper I louse altogether, as was tried some years ago by Mr. Lang. Oil to-mght’s dim ion the voting was equal, and the Government was victorious only on the casting vote of the chairman of committees.
