BUS TRIP TO PATLTAHI. NOMINAL PENALTY IMPOSED. Charged witli carrying oil a bus service between Gisuorne and Ratutahi on New Year’s Day, without being the holder of a license as prescribed by the Motor Omnibus Act, Bertha 'Wilcox appeared before Air. Chrisp appeared for the council and Air. A. W h teliead for the defendant. Air. L. T. Burnard watched the proceedings on helm f of Air. Salt.

Air. Chrisp explained t-rnt the traffic inspector stopped one of defendant’s buses on January i last when it was about to proceed to Paiutahi. it was a bus wUlfiu Hie terms ot the Act and it was operat ng in the motor omnibus area, as defined by that Act. No licence had been issued for defendant to run on that route. This was the first case of the nature brought m this district- Non-observance ot the regulations had been the source ol great trouble m the district and it was quite time the Act was administered more strictly. The bus was oil its way to a sports meeting.

The traffic inspector. Air. W. H. Scott, gave evidence in the lines ot counsel s opening. Edward Wb Harvey stated that be travelled out to I’atutahi by defendant’s 'bus. Stating that he did not propose to inflict a heavy penalty, since the prosecution was the first /of its kind in the district, the magistrate imposed a fine of £! ami costs Dfs, adding that, unquestionably, the regulations must be strictly complied with.
