J.P. ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report ol' the Gisborne Justices of the Peace Association for the year ended December 31, to be presented to the annual meeting this afternoon is as follows: “We began the year with a membership of 17 and added nine new members during the year. This is somewhat disappointing in view of the fact that between JO and 40 justices attended the inaugural, meeting called at the instance of Mr. A. J. Stratford, a visiting justice and an executive officer of the Auckland Justices of the Peace Association, and this organisation cririe into existence. The fact remains, however, that a number of those present failed to join the association It is to be hoped that during the incoming year, however, the enrolment of the whole of the justices in the district will he accomplished. In addition to this, the incoming executive is recommended to call a meeting of the. justices of the Wai. roa district, at an early date, with the object of forming a branch of our association m that town, and tints provide, if possible, a further extension of the association's usefulness.

“Your association was represented at the annual conference of the federation by its .president, Mr. \Y. Lissant Clayton, and shortly after Ids return io Gisborne a general meeting of members was called, at which the delegate gave a very fill] and interesting account of the* various remits that were discussed at the conference. It is very pleasing to note that when a summary of the recommendations of the •v'nference was subsequently presented by a deputation front the federation to the .Minister of Justice, he uas very favorably impressed with the usefulness of a. number of the suggested amendments to divers statutory laws coming within the administrative function of Justices of the Peace, and lie promised to give them his favorable consideration”. “The next annual conference will he held at Timaru in March. 1930. l.t is to he honed this association again will be represented. There is little doubt that the combined effect of the federation’s consensus of opinion, gleaned from its repiosentatiyes from all parts of the Dominion, will have, an undoubted in. lluence with the [Government and the public in respect to establishing moro useful and equitable edminis-. trations of the judicature by. the members of the commission of peace. “.I regret, to record the loss by death of Mr. H. E. Mill, wlvo. v,as a member of • the Auckland Justice of the Peace Association, and who intended to transfer to our association. A letter expressing our deepest sympathy was sent to Hie be reaved.”
