WOMAN’S FATAL FALL

SLIP ON CONCRETE STEPS TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES Fatal injuries were suffered by Mrs. Luck Martin, a well-known Rotorua resident, when she slipped and fell on the concrete steps at the Ohinemutu meeting house on Monday. Mrs. Martin had journeyed to Ohinemutu to pay her respects to the memory of the late Mr. Archibald Fabling, who was killed in a railway crossing accident in Rotorua.

A doctor was called, but Mrs. Marton almost immediately. Another tragic feature of the accident was the fact that the final details of the lease of the Tikitere property, with which Mrs. Martin’s name had been associated for the past 21 years, were to have been completed on Monday afternoon after protracted negotiations. Mrs. Martin had lived all her life in tl)e Rotorua district, and was known to the many thousands of visitors to “Hell’s Gate,’’ which had been developed as a tourist attraction by her. She was a daughter of the Rev. Ratina Awekotuku, one of the pioneer missionaries of the Rotorua district. She married Mr. Montague Martin, a forestry expert, Mrs. 'Martin claimed relationship with the tribes of Ngati-Whakaue, Ngati-Takinga, and Ngati-Rangi-teaorere, in all of which she held high rank.
