A Newspaper Man Fined.
(Pei: Press Association.) Auckland, Dec. 15. Arthur Cleave was charged at the Police Court with that he did on the 15th October unlawfully publish in the Sporting Review and Licensed Victuallers Gazette an advertisement with intent to induce persons to apply to Daniel McLeod and Robert Clealland, of Auckland, with a view of obtaining information with respect to events and contingencies Oi horae races. There were two other informations against defendants in respect to Mr Barnett and P. Grant and Taylor, of Cbristcburch. Defendant pleaded not guilty to all the three charges. Mr Tole appeared for the prosecution, instructed by the Inspector of Police, and Mr Cooper appeared for the defendant. His Worship held the advertisements were for no other purpose than to induce people to do business with those bookmakers. He lined defendant 20s with 28s costs in each case, remarking he was taking into consideration the fact that Cleave had given Detective Grace every assistance when the latter was making enquiries. _________
