Members of the Manchester Rifles are reminded of tbe Government parade on Thursday next. John Cobbe has effected a large purchase of fancy blouse and trimming silks (usual price 2s lid to 3s 6d), which he is clearing out at Is Cd per yard. Mr A. Laing, poundkeeper at Fowlers, gives notice today that a pony mare has been impounded and will be sold on the 21st inst, if cot claimed and all expenses paid before that date. The privileges in connection with the Polo Sports, to be held on the Feildine: racecourse on December 16, will be cold by auction on Wednesday next by Messrs Gorton and Son. He alao invites the public to a free lunch at noon on Boxing Day. Mr A. E. Judge, of Taonui offers his farm of 239 acres for sale at 113 an acre. This is a valuable property situ ated only a few chains from the Taonui railway station. It is subdivided into convenient paddocks and well watered. For other particulars see the advertisement. Mr F. F. Haggitt, of Messrs Guy and Haggitt, will leave Feilding for Auckland to-morrow whera lie will remain until New Year. During his absence Mr Nielsen, of Palmerston, will have charge of the local branch and will, also, act as secretary to the Feildiug Starr - Bov/kett Building Society in Mr Haggitt's absence. » In our advertising columns to day Mrs Hastie inserts her usual greetings for Christmas and New Year to her many friends and customers. Since this time last year very considerable alterations and improvements have been made in the popular Feilding Hotel, while the cellars have been replenished with a large stock of the very best ales, wines, spirits and liqueurs obtainable in the colony. Nominations for all handicap events at the Feilding Athletic Sports on Boxing Day close with the Secretary, Mr H. L. Sherwill, at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday next, December 9th, The running tracks are now in good order. They were topdressed at tbe conclusion of the football season and baTe now a good turf which has been properly rolled and the grass has been cut, considerably improving the tracks. Entry forms for the Cycling events may be obtained at the Star office. Mr T. E. Taylor, one of the members for Chriatcharch, said before the election : — " He pledged a loyal support to tbe Liberal party -a loyal and hearty support to progressive reforms. Walking over Naigara Falls on a wire being a dead sensation, a young man has decided to do something more exciting and hazardous. A wire is to be stretched from shore to shore, and he proposes to cross it on a bicycle. As even this might not be dangerous enough, the cyclist has determined to undertake the journey at midnight, and the wire is to be illuminated by electricity. Tbe man will wear on his head a circle of incandescent flames, to light which the current will be made to pass by moans of the steel wheels and a wire to the lamp. " Some of the competitions at tbe polo sports, which take place on Wednesday, 16th inst., should be amusing. The conditions of the Grefcna Green race are as follows:— "Competitors to start with two ponies, riding one himself and leading the other with side-saddle on. Gallop over hurdle to a tent about 150 yards distant, where members dressed as ladies are assembled. Each competii to assist his lady to mount, then mount his awn pony, the pair to gallop back over hurdle to starting post, dismount and sign their names legibly. Remount and gallop over hurdle, round a post, and back again over the hurdle to win* ning post. Lady must ride side saddle." The alarm of fire was given at about 7-30 last evening by tbe firebell being rung, bat, fortunately, the cause was only a rubbish heap which had been set fire to at fche back: pf Mr N.
