HALF-HOLIDAY TO MORROW.
An idea bas got abroad because certain of tbe businpss people of tbe town observed yesterday as a half boli day, that there will be no need for them to close tbeir premises to-morrow afternoon. This is quite a mistake because tbe intention and spirit of tbe Act is to give every employee an opportunity of going to tbe poll. We all know that many of tbe clauses in Acts of Parliament are badly worded and consequently capable of double interpretation, but Clause 10 of tbe Alcoholic Liquors Control Act, 1895, is singularly clear and explicit. It says: — "Every day on which the election of tbe Licensing Committee takes place, or -upon which the poll for local option under this Act is taken skull be and he deemed a puhlie holiday after midday " (Tbe italics are ours). Language could not be plainer. _________
