Birmingham Sports.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A public meeting was held on Saturday evening in the Druids Hall to conrider the advisability of forming an annual sports gathering. The Druids have held sports annually for the past three years, but the last gathering was not so satisfactory. The general public feeling that they were out of it unless a Druid, hence the desire of many to see the annual sports a success, no matter under whose auspices they were held. A fair number attended, Mr W. Morton being voted to the chair. Proposed by Mr McMurtry, seconded by Mr McNair, That a society be formed to carry out annual sports at Birmingham, and the same be called " The Caledonian Society."— Carried. Resolved, That the annual subscriptions be live shillings. Almost all those present expressed their intention of joining the new society a number paying their subscriptions. The folio wiag officers were elected : — Patrou, Mr T. Lowes; President, Mr Harrison; vice-presidents, D. McNair, A. Tompkins, R. Mcßeth, J. Jarvis, A. Laiijg, and J. H. Richardson ; treasurer, Mr W. Morton ; secretary, Mr F. Fanthorpe ; committee, Messrs, D. McNair, A. Pettigrew, E. Palmer, T. M. Jackson, W. Condor, Matheson, Bainbridge, Bell, senr., Gurke, and Oliphaot ; starter, Mi A. C. Matheson. There was an amount of discussioa as to the date on which the meeting should be held. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Barlow seconded by Mr Scott, That the sports be held on the usual date, the 18th ol January. Resolved, That on the evening of the sports gathering a concert be held. A number of gentlemen well knowr here were appointed a committee tc carry out the concert on behalf of the Caledonian Society. It was decided to adopt the Wanganui Caledonian Society's rules. A vote of thanks to the cbair terrain' ated a successful meeting. The new committee met afterward; and went through some business.
