« (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, Nov 16. The barque Phyllis arrived from New York this afternoon after a passage of 138 days. Several of the crew are suffering from scurvy and will probably be landed today and sent to the hospital. The Waimakiriki Ashley water supply work 9 W9ice formally opened to-day by the Premier. The race is estimated to supply 5,000,000 gallons of water daily, and the area to be watered is about 136,000 acres The Royal Hotel, Wood end, was broken into on Sunday morning, and whiskey and other articles valued at I'2o were stolen. There is no clue to the robbery. At the Magistrate's Court, Charles Love charged with vagrancy, was proved to have arrived here a fortnight ago with a gang of spielers, and to have been fre quently seen in the company of notorious pickpockets. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Wellington, Nov. 16. The ketch Clematis was towed into the harbour this afternoon in a disabled condition, having lost her foremast, main topmast, and most of her sails in a sale. Exhibits are pouring into the Exhibition buildiug. No awards are to be made and no judges havd been appointed, but certificates of merit may be given at the option of the Executive. Napier, Oct. 16. Mason, railway clerk at Waipawa, has disappeared. He has not been seen since Friday. Mr G. H. Swan has been re-elected Mayor unopposed for the twelfth time. Dunedin, Nov. 16. The Australian cricketers arrived thi-' afternoon and were formally welcomed by the members of the local Cricket Association. They proceed to Invercargill in the morning.
