The Timber Industry.
We learn from the Kegistrar^General's Department that at the date of the Census (April last} there were 299 sawmills and sash and door manufactories in operation, against 243 in 1886, an increase of 56, or at the rate of 23 per cent In the North Island there are 155 mills, and in the Middle Island 14,4. The hands employed in these mills increased during tbe gum» quennium at a still greater rate, the figures being 4059 persons for 1896, and 3266 for 1891. increase 793, or 24 per cent Four of tho hands employed in 1896 were women. The number of tends given in the returns does not include ever j body employed in connection with the industry, as there are many men eugigel in the bush work not included. Farther particulars are as under ; — l. Value of land, buildings, machinery, and plant, April, 1896, £573,422 ; April, 189,1. £50Q,272 ; increase, £73,150, or 14 62 per cent. 2. Value of all manufactures during 189"> and 1890. Year 1895. .£893,807 ; 1890, i-882,959; increase, £65,843, or 7*91 per cent The value of the export of timber far 1895 was £148,995,
