Several new advertisements from Mr J. B. Beckley of Sberborne House, will appear to-morrow. Numerous additions are made to-day to the entries fur Messrs Gorton and Son's Waitnna sale. The social in connection with St. John's Church will be held on Wednesday evening next. A magic lantern exhibition will be held at the Young Men and Boys' Club, Glasgow House, this evening at 7.30. An inqnest was held at the Palmerston N. Hospital yesterday on the body of D. Mason, and the jury returned a verdict that deceased was killed while bnsbielling in Waituna. Mr R. J. Thompson, of the Cash Exchange Co-op., has a replace advertise, ment in to-day, ia which he announces the opening up of the first consignments of spring and summer goods all of the latest and most fashionable classes. To persons desirous of purchasing seryiceable bicycle, and getting full value for their money, a notice which appears in another column from Mr F. J. W. Fear, of Willis street, Wellington, is well worth perusal. Messrs Hayne and Lloyd, merchants and land agents, have a large number of valuable properties for sale in all parts of the district, from which intending purchasers may have a good selection, the most liberal terms being of. fend.
Mr Carthew has now received a fall supply of Lett's Diaries for 1897. Captain Edwin wired at noon today : —Strong N.W. and S.W. wind and glass rising. Entries are advertised for Mr Carr's Birmingham sale, and additions made to the sale at Mr Arnott's at Apiti. To-day Mr Louis Holden sent away a bronze turkey gobbler which weighed 42 pounds. The bird was about two years old. A number of the local members of the Wesleyan Church journeyed from Feilding to Sanson last night to attend the Sunday school inaugural meeting there. To-morrow Mr James Wood will sell by auction at his mart, Feilding, a large lot of snndries, including some first class enamelled goods. For other particulars see advertisement. " I can't understand it," remarked the old subscriber, as he waltzed into the sanctum. "You can't understand what ? ' ' Why bloomers, being undoubtedly plural, should make a woman look so singular." We regret to learn that Mr Donald Manson, of Edenkillie, Rangitikei Line, has been laid up for some time with a severe and painful illness. Under expert medical attendance, combined with careful nursing he is now recovering. " I should think you would be an unwelcome visitor at the houses where you call," said a Picton man to a bill collector. ' You would think so, but it doesn't appear to me to be so.' 'It doesn't ? ' 1 No ; I'm generally invited to call again.' How to cook whitebait. One pint of the fish : — Use two eggs, one tablespoonful of flour, milk, pepper and salt, beat together ; wash the whitebait well, dry in a cloth ; mix all together ; fry in butter in small lots of one or two spoonfuls. Mr F. Pirani, M.H.R., announces his candidature for the Palmerston seat and also sets forth his political platform. He intends to shortly deliver addresses at the various centres of the electorate, the dates of which will be duly announced. January is always a great month for the Post Office Savings Bank in England, but this year the deposits have quite surpassed all former records. In the middle of last January the deposits reached the extraordinary figure of 1,000,000 a day. Messrs F. J. Gibbs and Co., the well known brewers ©f Wanganm, have an advertisement in to-day notifying they have made full preparations for the Christmas season, and are in a position to supply well matured bottled ale and stout of the very best quality. Mr John Gower (says the Pahiatua Herald) has just returned from a prospecting expedition in Mangabao Gorge. He has brought out some splendid samples of gold-bearing quartz secured from a reef. He has sent the samples to Auckland for analysis. The result will be waited for with interest. The Sawmillers' Association have again raised the price of timber 6d per 100 ft all round as from October Ist. On September Ist the price was put up to the nominal ruling rates, under which, however, many mills had been selling. The present prices are totara 14s 6d, rimu 7s, and matai 9s at the mills." — H.B. Herald. Messrs W. and J. Staples, the well known boot and shoe manufacturers, of Wellington, notify in another column that their customers and the public generally should beware of a number of stupid and worthless imitations of their celebrated Eangarette brands of boots and shoes. No article is genuine unless it bears the brand of Eangarette. An important notice to farmers appears in another column in which Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co , the well known auctioneering firm, of Wellington, publishes the dates for holding wool sales in Wellington, viz., November 13th, December 4th, January 22nd, and February 19th. Advances will be made by this firm on wool for sale in Wellington or for shipment to London. Messrs Wrigglesworth and Binns, the well known and popular art photographers, of Wellington, have a new advertisement in to day's issue. During the month of October this old established and enterprising firm are offering their patrons cabinets from 6/6 per dozen, and a dozen cabinets and •' Mona " from 15s. Visitors to Wellington would do well to inspect the firm's studio. The uses of the tent at the Bowling Tournament — Lady visitor (her first visit to tournament) — ' Why are the bowlers so constantly rushing off to that tent over there ? Is that part of the game ? ' Hoary old skip (furtively wiping his lips) — ' Yes, my dear, that's the most important part of all. You see, we've got to go there after each head to chalk up the score and find out how the game's going.' The Premier in reply to an interjection to postpone a clause in the Bank Bill till next year, said he did not want another Bill next year, as he had had quite enough of banking legislation during the last two years. Mr Seddon added amidst laughter that people who saw him now and knew him two years ago could see a great change in his appearance owing to the banking legislation. The other day in a pathetic letter to his wife Louis Cbemis, the convict, thus writes :— " I was told the Bill that Mr Mills had brought in was thrown out again. Well, it seems everything turns out a failure. You know, sometimes I almost wish I had done that deed, for then I would deservedly bear this hard and bitter fate, with all its disappointments ; for it is hard to be here and not know the reason why. lam down-heart* ed, but well, and hope you and children are well, also."— Standard.
