Seamen's Wages.
(Per Press Association.) Sydney, This Day. The steamship owners have considered the request of the Seamen's Conference to discuss the rates of wages. The owners declined, bat informed Mr Smith, Secretary of the Seamen's Union, they were prepared to meet representatives of the crews actually in their employ should they have any arguments to submit. | The local executives of the Seamen's | Union in the*variou« colonies have made | a similar demand. The seamen desire the present rates to be uniformly incraased to £8 and £6 per month. Mr Smith states it is many years since there was such difficulty in obtaining seamen, especially in Sydney, but he admits the remark does not apply to Melbourne. Still the shipping industry all over Australia is in healthy condition, and wages paid in other than maritime employment justify an increase of the present rates.
