A Desirable Settler.
It is always a pleasure for us to welcome new settlers in our midst especially when they come so highly recommended as Mr H. W. Tong, who has recently arrived from England to settle down at Colyton where he has relatives. We learn from The Lake's Falmonth Packet and Cornwall Advertiser of August 15th that Mylor Parish Council was the scene of a pleasant function on August 12th when Mr Tong, who had been assistant overseer of the parish for twenty years, and clerk to the Council since its formation, was presented with an illuminated address, a gold watch chain, silver tea set and a photograph of the Councillors as marks of appreciation in which he was held in the Parish. Colonel Tremayne J.P. presided, and in making the presentation said that in losing Mr Tong the Parishioners were losing one ot the most able and useful men in the Parish. In his new home Mr Tong would be able to look at the address which would bring back to his memory the happy days he had spent at Mylor. The photograph would show how highly the members of the Council appreciated his services, and when he wound up the beautiful watch presented to him by the Trufnsis Estate he must remember that the Parishioners in Mylor were getting np instead of going to bed. The address was signed by 180 inhabitants including the members of the Council. Mr Tong suitably replied. On the previous Tuesday Mr Tong was entertained by the officers and brethren of ths Freemasons Lodge, No 967 " Three Grand Principles" at a farewell supper. Bro Tong's health was proposed by the W.M., and responded to by all the brethren. The W.M. then presented Bro. Tong with a lithographed address which bore testimony to the high esteem he had always* been held by the brethren in the lodge, and recommending him in the highest possible terms to the Masonic fraternity in New Zealand. Bro Tong acknowledged the compliment in a neat speech.
