Birmingham Notes

(From Our Own Correspondent) A few days ago I had the pleasure of seeing "The Childe," Messrs Stewart and Kidd's trotting stallion. He is a fine upstanding bay horse, carrying his head high like Trenton. He has great depth about the shoulders which slide back into a high wither. A splendid chest and to judge between the lines abnormal heart room. His arms are well developed, the legs with good flat bone, and nicely shaped feet. He has a calm, masterful look, and I am not surprised to heat that he has a beautiful even temper. That is one of the good points about the American type of horse, their temper is equal to a strain that would unsettle the cart horse lot. It is unfortunate that the Childe was never trained. He was bought as a yearling for 120 guineas by a gentleman who used him as a stallion on his station. The Childe is by Childe Harold 414 (imp), record 2-25 — by Harold, 413 ; dam Violetta (imp), by Echo, 462. Childe Harold, record 2.25, has sired the fastest trotters in the Australian colonies. Violetta, jr., won Free for All, at Sydney, 2 miles, 5-7 ; Osterly, by Childe Harold, from Rothschild's dam, is the champion trotter of Australia — 1 mile, 2-25 ; 2 miles, 4-45 ; 8 miles, 7-30£ ; Yum Yum, 1 mile, 2 27 ; Rita, 1 mile, 2-30 : Nea, 1 mile, 2-34 ; Pastime, 2 miles, 5-7 se c; Fair Girl, 2 miles, 5-12; Fair Boy, 2 miles, 5-14 ; Pearl, 2 miles, 5-17, and many others. This district has now a good sound horse, related to the best trotters of the day. That he will leave good stock I am quite sure. May the enterprise of Messrs Stewart and Kidd be successful is my sincere wish.
