Smith, chairman, said tho severe competition in advances had left the borrowers masters of the situation, and there was not enough business to afford legitimate employment to vast banking capital in the colonies. A sustained rise in produce would improve the position of affairs, but this was unlikely to happen immediately. Australian banking was now approaching the English standard, and he hoped they would be the pioneers of cheap banking in the colonies. Arrived — Perthshire, from Syduey, August 6.
