Jennings and Jenkinson who represent j i labour in the Council, were both sure thafc [ the result of tho shortening of the hours I of labour Co 45 hours a week would be , i lowering the rate of wages, bnt the Hon. i Mr Bolt and the Minister attacked these j contentions. j The general feeling ot the speeches j was in opposition to the measure. j An amendment to read the Bill a second time six months hence was proposed I by the Hon. Mr McLean and carried by | 15 to 13, the BUI thus being rejected. The division list was as follows: — Ayes (for tha Bill, 13), :— Stewart, Barmcoat, Kerr, Kelly, Bigg, Jcnes, Jenkinson, Morris, Bolt, Montgomery, Feldwick, Jennings, W. C. Walker. Noes (for the amendment, 15), :—Reynolds, L. Walker, Richardson. Baillie, Acland, Scotland, Shrimski, MrGregor, Kenny, Bonar, Snevens, Johnston, Grace, McLean, Holmes. In Committee, new clauses were added to the Government Loans to Local Bodies' Act Amendment Bill permitting County Council to raise a loan and strike rates for repairs of bridges destroyed by Hoods, etc. Progress was then reported, and the | Council adjourned at 5 p.m. j
