Ruahine Notes.
• FROM OUH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] On Saturday evening last a meeting of householders was held to consider the advisability of obtaining a regular mail service between Kangiwabia and here. There was a yood attendance, and some tall talking regarding their requirements. It is almost needless to state our township urgently repuires a regular service, when it is known that a lage population is resident in and around here. Some settlers are at present fully sixteen miles from auy mail communication. It was unanimously resolved that active steps be taken to secure a tri-weekly | mail service. The necessary documents will be filled in and sent to the Post-master-General, so as to enable tenders to be called for the service immediately. | Mr Dobson has most generously offered to accept the position as posmaster. The other day Mrs Tossit had the misfortune to break three ribs by falling over a stump. lam informed she is now progressing favorably. Not to be behind iv athletic matters a cricket club was recently formed here, and a team sent, last Saturday, to try conclusions with the Rangiwahia Club, who won by an innings and 35 runs. Tins aud the surrounding country is undergoing a fast and complete change in appearauce. A largo area of bush is being felled, grass is growing rapidly, and stock is looking well. The past winter being the best experienced for some time, the roads arc not in such a bad state as usual at this time of the year. The population has increased so much that we have been in urgent need of a day school, so without any assistance from the Education Board a school was built on cooperative principles, and the Board have since sent a master. Last Saturday evening the members of the 1.0. G.T. Lodge held a public social. Bro. A. Hickford, C.T. of Rangiwahia, addressed the meeting, describing the business done at the Rongotea District Lodge meeting, and received a vote of thanks. During the evening the following persons contributed items: — The Misses Dobson (2), Bros. C. Crebb, Crawford, and Mrs Anderson, songs j Bro. A. Hiekford, recitation ; Bros. Crawford, McLennan, and Dcnham, readings. The refreshments were provided by the ladies, and presided over by Mesdames Frost and Stevenson.
