In the Supreme Court to-day, Richard Crabbe, temperance lecturer, becan an action for L2OOO damages against the New Zealand 'limes, and its publisher. Afcer deliberating three hours the jury returned with a verdict of LSO damages against the New Zealand Times. Costs according to scale. In the Divorce Court Janet Mitchell, of Greytown, obtained a decree nisi for a dissolution of marriage with Alexandor Mitchell on the grounds of cruelty and adultery. In the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Jellicoe said there was still on the list an action for criminal libel brought by Austin Kirby, ex-Detective, against Patrick S. Cassidy and Alfred Ashbolt, in which he had applied to enter a nolle prosequi, but as to which the Crown Prosecutor had not filed his fiat. It had now been determined to proceed with the case as the attacks on Kirby bad been renewed in that morning's Times. The Chief Justice said that he had read the paragraph referred to, and certainly supposed that it was a renewal of the libel. Mr Skerrett objected to the case being proceeded with after an application had been made for a nolle prosequi. Ultimately His Honor said that the case should stand. It will probably come on at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Auckland, August 28. A great sea serpent was seen on August 23rd on the West Coast, at tbe back of Mangawhare. The City Couucil passed a motion to frame a bye law to suppress the assem blages of men in the streets for tbe purpose of street betting, this practice having become a great nuisance. Tbis Day.
