At the Magistrate's Court, Albert Kirby, aged 17, a son of ex-detective Kirby, and Joseph Barry were charged with breaking and entering the Novelty Depot and stealing goods valued at £'2 12s 4d. They were remanded for a week. Barry was released on bail but Kirby was detained in custody aa no application for bail was made on his behalf. New Plymouth, August 25. Robert Snell is announced as an independent candidate for Egmont and Richard Aroa (a Prohibitionist) for Taranaki. Nelson, August 24. About five this evening a man, aged 27, who gavo the name of John Shannon, walked into the police station and gave himself in charge, stating he had cut his throat. He had a handkerchief round his neck and his coat buttoned up. Dr Roberts was instantly called and the man removed to the hospital, but though he has a shocking flesh wound and the windpipe is partly severed, his life is not deemed in danger. Shannon is a commercial traveller, representing a Wellington jeweller, but his friends are in Holittika. Lyttklton, August 23. At the inquest concerning tbe death of Constable Thomas Ward, who fell off the train in the Lyttelton tunnel on Thursday night, the jury returned a verdict thai; there was no evidence to show what caused him to fall from the carriage ; and expressed an opinion that tiie unknown companion of deceased was deserving of d nsure for failing to report the accident to tbe railway authorities. Dunedin, August 25. Mr Murray Aston, the well-known insurance agent and lecturer, will be a candidate for the city. It is understood Government offered Mr H. J. Matthew.*, tbe well-known nurseryman the position to organise the State forest department, and that offer has been accepted. Wellington, August 24. The delegates for tbe wholesale Co. operative Sociecty oi' Manchester, who are touring Australia, reach Tasmania about September 12th, thence they come on to New Zealand.
