End of the Matabele War.
A TRIUMPH FOR MR RHODES. (Per Press Association) Cai'ETows. August 23. Mr Cecil Rhodes, accompanied by oue or two ofiicers of the while troops, who wc-ic not armed, met six of the principal chiefs of tin- Mntabelc: natives. The luttei- included two brothers of Lol.enguela, and these, with !31 Indunns from The Matoppo hills, negotiated for five hours. The chiefs complained of the Native police in Matabcleland. also as to tbat of one prominent official of the Chartered Company. They declared that if Mr Rhodes stayed and protected the natives, there would be no more fighting. Mr Rhodes blamed the Matabele for tbe murder of white women and children in isolated districts, and stated that the police, against whom complaints were made, were now disbanded, and that an official of the company bad left tbe service. In conclusion, Mr Rhodes asked, " Was it to be — peace or war ?" In reply, the chiefs laid a gun and an a«se«ai at tbe feet of Mr Rhodes, und promised there would be no further molestation of Rhodes ; also, that the native camps in the Matoppo bills would be broken up in a few days.
