The Kirby Case.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, Augast 10. The Supreme Court was occupied from 10 this morning nntil 7 to-night, hearing the evidence against Detective Kirby for the alleged extortion of money from one J. Herman, at Timaru in 1832, by threatening to accuse him of a crime. Mr Gully, Crovrn Prosecutor, and Mr Gray, appeared for the Crown, and Sir B. Stout and Mr Jellicoe for the defence. The Chief Justice is hearing the case. The witnesses examined to-day were Herman, tobacconist, George, who was Herman's assistant at the time of the alleged offence ; Elundell, teller of the Bank ; who produced cheques drawn by Herman and Sergeant Cullen, who was in charge of the Timaru police station in 1882. The evidence adduced at to-day's trial was mainly a repetition of that given in the lower Court, and the cross-examin-ation of Oullen had not concluded when the Court adjourned until to-morrow morning. It is expected that the case w*ll not be finished until Thursday,
