It is said that overtures have been made to Colonel Fox by the Japanese Government, and a strong inducement made to accept service there. Members of the Manchester Rifles are reminded of the inspection parade to be held this evening by Lieut. Col. Newall. Punctuality is particularly requested. Out of 81,170 tons of meat received at the London Central market during the month of May, 6,687 tons came from New Zealand and Australia ; 5,910 tons from America ; and 2,828 tons from foreign parts ; the balance (16,744 tons) being British meat. Last evening a very pleasant invitation dance was given in the Assembly Rooms. There was a large attendance, there being nearly fifty couples who tripped the light fantastic until a late hour this morning to the music supplied by Mr R. F. Haybittle's string band. At a meeting of the Feilding Quoit Club last evening it was decided to join the Rangitikei -Manawatu Quoit Association. It was also decided to play a return match with Marton in the last week in August or first week in September, and to play a match with Hunterville at a date to be arranged. In response to numerous requests from various parts of the electorate, Mr F. P. Kellow announces by advertisement in another column that he will, at tbe forthcoming election, contest tbe Rangitikei seat against all comers. Mr Kellow, at aa early date will place bis views on the leading political questions of tbe day before the electors. A discerning public will not fail to recognise tbe true teat of cheapness is the best value for money obtainable hence the success of the surplus stock sale during the last week or two at the Sherborne House, only another week to run, those who wish to avail themselves of the bargains should give Mr Beckley a call. Referring to the opera " Paul Jones," the Standard says : — " We must confess ourselves astonished at the complete manner in which this popular opera was placed before the public. The dialogue was capitally interpreted, the staging excellent and the solos and choruses went with such a swing that they left nothing to be desired." A carpenter named Muller who was engaged at work recently on some additions to the Royal Oak Hotel, Wellington, fell from a height of 30 feet to the ground. The accident was caused owing a concrete ledge giving way beneath the man's weight. Muller was removed to the hospital, and at latest advices was > balievcd to be in a critical condition. Entries for Messrs Gorton and Son's sale at Sanson on August sth are now advertised. Tbe Feilding Tennis Club dance, held in tbe Foresters' Hall last evening, was very successful. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : —Strong E. to S. and S.W. winds with more rain, glass rise after 10 hours from now, with colder weather. A man named William Wylie was sentenced at Waipawa to three months imprisonment without the option of a fine J for cruelly illtreating a horse. i It is understood that a well known cyclist of Raugitikei intends taking a trip to Australia, to compete in several cycling events during the coming season. We regret very much to learn that diphtheria has made its appearance in Beacousfield. Parents' should remember that pine apples are almost a certain preventive. A new advertisement from Messrs Spence and Spence, of the Bon Marche, announcing further sweeping reductions at their monster sale will appear in tomorrow's issue. Members of the Feildiug Harmonic Society are reminded of the practice to Ibe held at 7 p. in this evening, when all are expected to attend. |The orchestra will meet at 9 p.m. sharp— after the general meetiug. The friends of Mr Walter Woodman, j of Beaconsfield, are notified that the funeral of his late daughter, Leah Eliza, aged 7 years, who died yesterday from an attack of diphtheria, will leave his residence, to-morrow, at 11 a.m., for the Feilding cemetery. Messrs Wood and Judkins annouuee that in addition to the sale of fruit trees etc., at 10 a. in ou Saturday, they will hold their usual sale at 1 p.m., at which they will otter without reserve a quantity of good tweed and household furniture. Additions are also made to the list of trees. The gathering at the Boys' Club on Saturday afternoon last proved to be thorongbly eojoyable. About fifty boys attended and showed an interest in the proceedings which greatly encouraged the promoters. Two beautiful microscopes kindly lent by Messrs Stevens and Greenwood, gave ureat^lee. Interesting specimens of setds, insects' wings and limbs, sea weed, etc., were all eagerly inspected. Tea was seived about 5.30 p.m.. which was kindly provided by friends. Another gathering will be held ou Saturday uext, when one of the beys will exhibit uua^ic lautern pictures. The statement of accounts in the es tate of Samuel Marsden Baker, studmaster, at Flcmingtou, Wauganui, as filed with Mr J. Notmau, D.0.A., shows total liabilities amounting to £622 9s, as against total assets estimated to realise £1600, thus leaving a surplus of 1977 11s. The assets consist of stud and race horses, estimated at £1500 and book debts £'182 17s, estimated to realise £100. The horses referred to above, together with the respective estimated values, are as follows ; — At Kereru, Manawatu : Somnus, £500 ; Lochnagar, £250 ; 3 year-old colt, £100 ; Nina, £20, and Fugitive, £20. At FlemiDgton, Wanganui : Rangatira, £100 ; Lady Artist, £100 ; Wairuareka, £100 ; Patience £50 ; 3-year-old filly, £50 ; Mabel £50 ; Lady Artist yearling, £50 ; Wairuareka filly, £30 ; Lucky filly, £20 ; Mabel filly, £10 ; Fugitive filly, £10 ; Patience filly, £10 ; Brown Bess, £10 ; Brown Bess colt, £10 and Patience foal, £10.
