(Per Press Association.'* Capetown, July 27. The rebel position in Ma'.oppo hills has not been shaken and tho holders resisted several attacks. Tbe position of the whites at Gwelu is reported critical and famine prices rule. [The Matoppo Hills are situated in the heart of the Matabeleland among a number of tributaries of the famous river Zambesi. Gwelu is somewhat to the northward. The country is rich, and invites settlement.] July 28. The Matabele are extremely confident and jeer at the whites, calling them cowards. A majority of the pioneers are leaving Buluwayo in the belief the war will likely be protracted. Capt Hurrell had a sharp engagement with the enemy at Belingwe, but succeeded in effecting a junction with the force from Fort Victoria.
