The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, JULY 25, 1896. A WEST COAST LORD.
The Wanganui Chronicle of yesterday complains that there is no rernesema tive in the Legislative Council for that portion of the West Coast between Rangitikei and Taranuki, and consid ers, therefore, that the coast is entitled io another Lord. Our contemporary
goes on to say : — " The only point to be determined is whether he is to represent the town or country. Of course he must be a supporter of the present Government. That unfortu- ! nately reduces the number of eligibles to very narrow limits. We have heard the matter discussed among the faithful, and it appears to be admitted that ; the running is between Mr James Dnigan, the editor of our local contemporary, and Mr John Handley, of Nukumaru. We refrain from saying which of the two aspirants we prefer, lest we should injure our favorite's chances with the Government." This is all very well for Wanganui, but we venture to think that the Kangitikei and Palmerston electorates have much stronger claims for consideration than even °the much n^lected section referred to by the Chronicle. Not only that, for where there appears to be only two gentlemen qualified in Wanganui there are twenty in our district. With a caution superior to that of our contemporary we refrain from mentioning them by name.
