Awahuri Notes.
Ffboh ocb own cobbbspondent. I On Monday evening the annual meeting of shareholders and subscribers to the public hall and library was held. The balance-sheet brought forward by the Secretary, Mr Tarrant, showed a very satisfactory amount on the right side. And this, taken in conjunction with the large number of books added to the library during the past year, shows that the people of Awahuri fully appreciate its advantages, and also that they substantially support it. The library has been in existence now for the last two years, and during that time it has made great strides towards civilisation. Originally it was started by the people sending in all their spare books (penny dreadfuls, etc.,) to Mr Tarrant, who kept them them in his store room, kindly lent for the purpose ; but now the library has some three or four hundred first-class bound books and a tidy little reading room fitted up with stove, etc., and also a neat comfortable hall. Too much praise cannot be given to Mr Tarrant to whose energy and liberality much of the improvements are due. After the business of the above meeting was transacted, a meeting was held when it was decided by those who remained to form a gymnasium club, and a strong committee was formed to work it up.
