Timber Conference.

GOOD MARKET IN VICTORIA FOR WHITE PINE. (Per Press Association) Wellington, July 17. The Timber Conference was opened to-day by the Premier. About eighty delegates were present Mr Seddon said the object was to deal with one of the most important industries in New Zealand, and which claimed their most serious attention. The Conference was, he could see, a thoroughly representative one, and he suggested the following subcommittees should be established— To report on timbers best suited for export, building and joinery ; planting of trees, prevention of destruction and preservation of forests. The Premier proposed Mr Trapp, of the Kauri Timber Company, as President, which was carried unanimously, and Mr Bagnall was elected vicePresident. The Conference adjourned until 9.30 in the morning, when the classification committees will be set up. This Day. At the Timber Conference this morniflg Mr Trapp, President, deilvered an address, and pointed out there was now a large market in Victoria for white pine, where eight or nine million feet would be taken in place of one several years ago. Mr Trapp strongly condemned the bad condition in which timber had been sent, especially from Greymouth, owing to the want of proper seasoning. He suggested the establishment of a fund by the sawmillers for the purpose of exploiting new markets. Mr Butler, Greymouth, read a paper on the unsatisfactory state of the timber trade, and proposed various remedies. Five committees were set up to deal with various branches on the subject, and the conference adjourned till Monday afternoon.
