A Settler Killed by a Bull.
o An old and respected settler in Rangitikei, named John Simpson, living near Frecklington Line, was missed late last Saturday, and was discovered early yesterday morning dead in a paddock near his house, having been gored by a bull. Constable Gleeson went over at once to make enquiries, and arrange for holding an inquest. In reporting to the coroner (Mr Alex. Simpson), Constable Gleeson states that no person saw the occurrence, and when the body was found several bruises were noticed on his head, arms, and body, leading to the belief that deceased had made a great fight for his life. His clothing was considerably knocked about, and his coat torn to ribbons. The paddock where the body was found was much torn up, the hoof marks of the bull being plainly visible over a large area of ground. The animal was found some distance off, and appeared to be in a great state of illhumour. It appears he was dehorned some time since to prevent his breaking open gate 3. The late Mr Simpson was well-known througbont the district, and was a settler who was esteemed for many excellent qualities. — Mercury.
