Wellington, June 26. .Considerable surprise has been ex* pressed at the statement published by ~ tKe 1 Marton Mercury of Wednesday, and Other papers in tbe colony, that an independent Liberal party was being formal in the Honse, and tbe authorship of the article is ascribed to Mr G* W. Russell, In consequence of the statement Messrs J. W. Kelly, G. J. Smith, Earnshaw and Pirani have asked the "•' ebrirespondehts tostate that the meeting referred to in such communication was f6r(tM ? Bole purpose of dealing with the suggested Banking Committee, and that the&ohclusions arrived at were embodied in the amendment given notice of by Mr G.W. Russell.
