LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, June 25. The Council met at 2.30. In moving the second reading of the Contagious Disease Act Repeal Bill (which passed the Lower House on Tuesday evening), Mr Walker said the measure had twice passed tbe House of Representatives, and the question fof those who had opposed it was now whether the will of the people should not be given effect to. After a short debate, in which the majority of speakers were opposod to repealing the Act, somo expressing the opinion tbat it would be better for the colony if the Act were brought into operation, the second reading was negatived by 20 votes to 11, and the Bill thus thrown out. In Committee on the Adulteration Prevention Acts Amendments Bill, subsections were added providing that condensed milk and coffee must bear labels giving the analysis of the ingredients. Mr Feldwick moved the second reading of the Defamation Bill. The second reading was agreed to on the voices. The Council then adjourned.
