The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY. JUNE 24, 1896. MR BELL, M.H.R.
o ■ On his return to Wellington from Eugland, Mr H. D. Bell, M.H.8., was duly interviewed by a representative of the ftveping Post. Questioned as to the feeling in London financial circles regarding New Zealand's financial position, Mr Bell said " The feeling is one of indifference— he does not think that anyone troubles about it. /fhe general feeling is that the colony's interest will be paid, and that appears to be all that is cared about. Concerning the mining boom, there is a great desire on the part of people in London to get hold of New Zealand mining shares— to sell them. They have a great belief in New Zealand, and the reason is that when he was in England the Transvaal trouble was on and people would not invest there, and as to Western Australia— well, they were tired of that, and New Zealand was a new field for them. Mr Bell finds there is a great desire in London to invent in New Zealand \ in any form where the capital; will be .secure. There is, however^ considerable doubt whether recent legislation might not effect securitiiesi^t^bisut^.th.e New Plymouth bondholders Mr Bell heard nothing, and concerning the historical • unpledged ' care to speak^||^^iin?^|[^ Hi told you' so ',. 61^^ is also reticent :s^^^rain^:;sh^^c e(n't'- :- bankingdeveloj^inelnita; |; He^liasa gppdl word ' to say, i l^wf yer^ fojr , iiew AgentGeneralp^o^ih^ei^^lfis;; showing much energy and ability in I
his position." Our readers will note that — to a certain extent — New Zealand was favorably regarded as a field of investment partly, no doubt, because " the colony's interest will be paid " and partly because other colonies — the Transvaal and Western Australia, were " played ont." It is within the limits of probability that Mr Bell in his place in Parliament will be more communicative than he was to the Post representative on the subject of the Banking legislation, past, present, or to come.
