The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 1896. THE BANKING ENQUIRY.
We agree with our contemporary tb« Canterbury ±*ress that it behoves the House to be very cautious against being hurried into a course of action which it might afterwards have reason to repent. As we have already pointed oat in our columns we ought to re member that the Bank of New Zealand is now practically a State institution, and we hive to bear its burdens on our backs. AH the wild talk which has been indulged in about ripping up the events of bygone years, and going into private accounts of customers of the bank, is not only beside the question, but is likely to do the bank a great deal of harm, the burden of which may ultimately fall on the taxpayers of the colony. Let members consider first of all what field, in the public interest, the enquiry ought to cover; and secondly, how a proper enquiry can be most fairly and impartially secured. The two main questions, we take it, to be decided are, whether in regard to the banking legislation of 1894-95 the Government are still entitled to the public confidence; and secondly, whether any changes should be made in the present management of the Bank of New Zealand. The idea of a Royal Commission, in preference to a Parliamentary Committee composed of a majority of Government supporters, vis also gaining ground, and our contemporary considers a CompjL-s on of three Judges, following the precedent of the Paroell commissibnj would meet all requirements. . ■■•■■ .• J
