Manawatu County Council.
The ordinal-}' monthly mooting of the above Council was held in the Council Chambers, Sannon, on May 13th at 11 a.m. Present — Crs Ransom (chairman), Hammond, Taylor, Masters, Itobiuson, and A. Strang. The minutes of the previous meeting were read a Ltd continued. luward and outward correspondence was read. Inward as follows : — From P. Stewart, re proposed road through Birnam property. From H. Honour, re road on Main Drain. From H. D. Atkinson re County Council Conference. From H. D. Atkinson re payment to same. From J. J, Meldon, re state of roads in Kawa Kawa ridint'. From Manager of Foxton Telegraph, re advertising. From A. Forsaith, re contract on Rowe's Line. From Bank of Australasia, re rate of interest on overdraft. From J. P. limes, re conveyance of road at Matahiwi. From Premier's Office, re Levin-Great-ford railway. From Dr Lamb, re diphtheria at Motuiti. From Gorton and Son, re transfer of section in Sanson. From Secretary to Treasury, re loan of .£650 being now available. From Town Clerk of Foxton, re halfyear's interest on loan. From M. Alderson, re transfer of slaughtering license to A. Koberstein. From H. V. Pickering, re slaughtering license. From H. Hinks, impounding report. From C. N. CJansen, re payment for sleepers. From J. G. Wilson, asking leave of absence. A petition was presented from a number of ratepayers praying that Sanson's Line be put in a thorough state of repair before the winter sets in. Tne following resolutions were passed : That A. Forsaith be granted extension of time on his metalling contract on Rowe's, aud part of Hammond's, line until he receives notice from Overseer. That renewals of slaughtering licenses be granted to H. V. Pickering and M. Alderson, and that a transfer be agreed to from M. Alderson to A. Koberstein. That Mr Hinks be informed that if he is prepared to erect a pound in accordI ance with the Act, and pay all expenses in connection with the transfer from the present pound to the new, this Council will make public notification of the intention to remove the site. That the opinion of the Council's solicitor be taken re the matter of controlling heavy traffic upon the roads within the County. That the Chairman meet the petitioners and explain the position of Sanson's road. That Mrs Ellen Croucher's name be placed on rate roll in place of Mr S. Fagau for sections 4 and 5, Sanson. That defaulting ratepayers in each riding be summoned for rates next Caurt day in Bulls, and that 10 per cent be added. Formal notices were given to strike a general rate of one half-penny (id) in the £ on the rateable value of the County, also separate rates of one half-penny in the £ in the Sandon and Awahuri ridings, three-eighths (3-Bth) of a penny in the £ in the Carnarvon, Campbell, Waitohi and Kawa Kawa ridings, and one. farthing (±d) in the £ in the Mount Stewart riding for the year ended 31st March, 1897. DEPDTATIONS. Mr Giescn interviewed the Council re road from foot of Mount Stewart to Mr Mr Purkiss' gate on the Feilding Awahuri road, but in the absence of definite information from Messrs Hunter and Stewart the position of affairs could not be much advanced. Mr James Henderson waited on the Council re drain on Speedy's Line and pointed out the hardship he was suffering on account of the drain not being cleaned out. No definite action was taken. Mr Ellery pointed out the great injury he done to the newly metalled portion of BlcDonell's road through the heavy carting of fire wood, the r^id being almost prohibitive for light wheel traffic. Solicitor's opinion to be taken on the matter.
