Concert at Apiti.
The inclemency of the weather on Wednesday last did not prevent a large number of residents attending a meeting held to welcome the Rev. Mr Peryman, who has recently been appoiuted to the Wesleyan Church. The meeting was opened by singing a hymn, and, after prayer by Mr Peryman, the chairman (Mr H. Tolley) gave a very good address. The choir contributed a number of choice solos and duets iv capital style, which were much appreciated. Mr W. Grace, of Palmerston North, made a decided hit with his song " Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep," and gained a very hearty encore. The same gentleman also contributed " Calvary " in splendid style, which the audience were not slow to appreciate. One of the gems of the evening was the duet " Charity," sang by Misses Nellie and Edith Gascoigne, an encore being promptly demanded. Miss Nellie Gascoigne also sang "Ora Pro Nobis " in a very feeling manner, and received as she deserved the very hearty approval of the audience. Addresses were delivered by the Rev. Mr Peryman, Messrs Tolley, Miller, Feild, Guy, and Gascoigne, the latter also contributing a reading on sermons. A bounteous supply of refreshments had been provided by the lady members of the Church which was assailed in a very vigorous manner by the rising generation of Apiti, who seemed to fairly revel in the good things provided. The singing of the Doxology, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman, brought a very enjoyable meeting to a close.
