Destructive Fire at Marton.

Maeton, May 1. At about 4.15 this morning the people of Marton were awakened by the unusual clanging of the fire bells, and it was soon evident that the fire fiend was rampant in High Street. Mr S. H. Bussell was awakened by one of his daughters crying out, " What is the matter ? " and on arising found the back part of the old workshop all ablaze. Members of the Mebcuuy staff were amongst the first on the scene, and at this time the fire appeared to be confined to one room. In an incredibly short space of time, though, and no doubt owing to the strong westerly wind blowing, the fire spread with remarkable rapidity. Members of the Marton Brigade w«re wery early on the 9pot, but their efforts were futile to check the devastating element. In very quick succession the following buildings fed the flames. After Russell's old workshop, then came his warehouse and residence, then followed the Salvation barracks, Dr Mac Cartby's residence, the Post and Telegraph Office, and as we go to press at 5 30 the Courthouse is in flames. The telegraph wires are down. Strenuous exertions are being made to save Mayo's Hotel on the opposite corner, with every prospect of success. Later The fire has been practically extinguished, further damage being averted through the efforts of the Fire Brigade in checking the flames at the Courthouse, which is wrecked. The Brigade and townspeople worked admirably.— Mercury.
