♦__ The Library coacert 'will take place at Beaconsfield this evening. Mr Beckett's next Hnnterville stock sale will be held on 7th May. Entries appear in another column. It is stated that a small steamer is about to be put on the Ofcaki river for pleasure parties and fishing purposes. The season for imported game, including cock pheasants and Californian quail opens to-day, and closes on June 30th. Entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams Palmerston sale, and additions to that firm's (Pohangina sale appear today. Many men have lived honorably, and died " full of years" who never knew the meaning of that awful word - preterpluperf'ect. The vital statistics for Palmerston N. district for the month of April are as follows :— Births, 30 ; Deaths, 6 ; Marriages, 5. A Gisborne bankrupt who returned his assets as nil has, in order to avoid ulterior consequences, been obliged to pay his creditors 20s in the £ cash. We have been requested to state that vendors will assist purchasers of stock at Mr Carr's Apiti sale, to be held on May 11th, to cross the Oroua river. Mr C. Carr held a sale at bis Feildmg yards to-day, the attendance being very good. The entries of sheep were large, but only small entries of cattle came forward. On Saturday, May 9th, a poll will be taken in the Nikau school house on a proposal to raise a loan of £2959 for construction of roads in the Pohaagiaa and Mangaone ridings. The clerk of the Eiwitea County, Mr E. Goodbehere, publishes a notification to-day relative to the intention of the Council to make certain rates as detailin the advertisement. It is stated by a Dunedin resident that a new process of condensing milk has been discovered by which it will be possible to make a substantial profit after, paying 4d per gallon for the milk. Ten shillings reward is offered for a sheep dog lost between Peep-o'-Day and Fowlers', black over body, two white front feet, white under neck, answers to the name of Roy, the property of Mr McNeil, Peep-o'-Day. Mr F. M. Boss, of Pohangina, was married on Wednesday at Porewa (Marton), to Miss Signall, daughter of Mr G. Signall. During the afternoon the wedded pair left for their home at Pohangina, amidst wishes of good luck and prosperity. We remind our readers of the usual auction sale to be held at Messrs Wood and Judkins auction rooms at 1.30 p.m. to-morrow. The remainder of Mr J. P. Cowie's drapery stock is to be offered, j and a larger quantity of produce and sundries than usual. The goods are open to inspection. The Manchester Rifles paraded last night for inspection by Lieutenant-Col. Newall. There was a very small muster owing to the inclemency of the weather. However some useful work was done. In the course of the evening Col. Newall decorated Captain Kirton with the long service medal. A " drunk " was caught in the Clutha district the other day. A speculative individual who resides in that virtuous locality made overtures to " lease it while it lasted " with a view to exhibiting the object at sixpence per capita. The proposal was respectfully but firmly declined by the " boy in blue " who wanted it for himself." Mr Mackay, Government Geologist, goes to Woodville to-morrow for the purpose of examining a find of petrified wood or lignite. He proposes on arrival of the coach on Tuesday to visit the scene of the supposed coal discovery in the Tiraumea Valley, and afterwards he will examine the coal and fireclay deposits at Mauriceville. — Standard . On Wednesday afternoon Mr Joseph George Browne, of Pohangina, was united in the bonds of matrimony to Miss Alice Louise Robert, a daughter of Mr C. W. Robert, of Stouey Creek, Palmerston North. The ceremony was performed at the residence of the bride's parents by the Rev Mr Thompson. We wish the happy couple every prosperity in their wedded life. A correspondent of the St James' Gazette says — " I often hear English people yainly endeavouring to pronounce the name Eruger. Sometimes it is ' Erooger ' (hard g), sometimes • Krojer.' The South African Dutch g is more like a guttural h than anything else, and Eruger ia pronounced in the Transvaal something like • Ereehyer. 1 " The London correspondent of ' Truth ' says :•- 1 hear that Mr Edward Wakefield is doing remarkably well with certain patents for which he has secured the agency, and which I believe he is pushing with great success in America and in France. I heard also that he has been obliged to give up literary work for a time owing to an attack of writer's cramp, but I hope this is not correct. All through the Manawatu and Horowhenua Counties there will be a shortage of oats this season, and supplies will probably come from the South Island. Wheat has been sown in fair quantity. Crested dogs-tail has been sown in such quantity that there is enough on hand for a couple of years. The above items are supplied by an official who is gathering information on agricultural matters.—Farmer. A meeting of delegates of various temperance bodies was held at Marton on Wednesday for the purpose of discussing the advisability of nominating and supporting a candidate for the Rangitikei electorate in the coming election. After some discussion it was resolved to ask Mr A. R. Atkinson if he wonld be inclined to contest the seat in the interests of the Temperance party. A platform was also adopted, the prominent features of which were that clubs should be brought within the scope of the provision of the Licensing Act and that steps should be taken to have provision made in the Act for enforcing colonial prohibition.— Advocate. l v '
A chess and draughts club, with a strong membership, has been formed in Apiti. Captain Edwin wired at 1.30 p.m. today :— Glass further rise, but fall again after 16 hours from now, with stroug N. to W. and S.W. winds. Messrs Wood and Judkins report that the furniture and effects of Mr Alderson batcher, Rongotea, sold by them at auction yesterday, realised very satisfactory prices. Messrs Spence and Spence, of the Bon Marche, have now on hand a splendid selection of tnens waterproof overcoats of the best make and a large variety of ladies macintoshes. To-day Mr H. Holmes, manager of the Highden station at Awahuri, advertises for sale about 40 tons of first class potatoes, comprising Derwents, Brown River and American Rose. Six of the Feilding bowlers, who went to Wanganui on Wednesday, remained there yesterday, when they played another match with the same number of Wanganui players. The rinks were — Messrs Scott, Bray, Saywell, and Youne (Feilding) v. Messrs Perrett, Tuck, Anderson, and Bennie (Wanganui) ; and Messrs W. Hodren and J. McLaren (Feilding) v. Messrs E. Hodren and and Purneli (Wanganni). The scorers were, in the full rink, Feilding 26 and Wanganui 22; and in the half-rink Feilding 15, Wanganui 18. ;
