A proposal has just been made in England by a prominent layman, Mr John Cooper, of Manchester, a solicitor and a Conservative in politics, which, if carried, will result in a radical change in Wesleyanism in England, and will amount to emancipating it from any State control, and making in reality, what it is in name — a Free Church. At present the Wesleyan body is limited by a deed poll, and can only be set free by a private Act of Parliament. Mr Cooper's action was suggested by the proposal to extend the ministerial term, which is at present limited to three years. Mr Cooper thinks that Methodism should be free not in this respect only, but in every respect, to carry out its views unchecked by Parliament. This is the most radical change that has been made in the Wesleyan Methodist body for many years, and is certain to <vrr»itn a vflrv ."rftat, nmnnnt nf intareftt.
