A Shocking Fatality.
At Bendigo, on the evening of the 13th inst., a blasting accident occurred in the New Victoria Catherine Mine, California Gully. James Whelan, Robert McEwan and Collins, were cross-cutting at the 656 level, and had bored two holes. Collins proceeded to the flat while Whelan dried the wet hole. Collins at the fiat in a few minutes heard a shot, and going back saw McEwan nearly cut in two by a stone from the blast. There was a hole in bis ribs large enough to insert a hand. Whelan was alive, though his intestines wero protruding through two gaping wounds, and the liver and lungs were badly lacerated. Whelan stated that a stick of rackarock exploded while he was putting it down a hole. Whelan was only 28 years of age, and was married 12 months since. His wife was confined 10 days previously. McEwan was 19 years of age, and the only support of a widowed mother and her fanftly. Whelan died at 10 o'clock at night.
